NPC Dialog

Digital Changeling > Game Design > Clerical Error > Build, Decor, and Puzzles > NPC Dialog

WARNING: This game is the ancestor of the Clerical Error game written more recently by Kathleen De Smet. The newer game has undergone heavy revision. If you read this game you will both spoil some secrets and end up with some wrong information.

This dialog was scripted before the actual game, so I'm pretty sure that not all of it was said at all (nevermind in exactly the same form). I still thought it would be amusing to include since it captures the basics of what many of the NPCs said.

Maitre D

Welcome to The Hotel, sir. Do check in, if you would please, sir. Thank you, very nice. Let me take you to your seat. I believe you've all met before, so we should have a jolly evening together. Your waiter will be here shortly with menus and drinks and such. I will check back later to make sure everything is satisfactory.
...
(at the end of the game) I am terribly sorry about the confusion. It was a clerical error on our part. As recompense, please accept these gift certificates for another night's stay at The Hotel.

Clotho goes crazy at dinner

(to Lucia) I smell him on you...

(To Rae) Red in your eyes, red on your hands... It will never wash out.

(To Avery) He sowed but did not reap. How could you have done that?

(To Seth) You could have done something. All he wanted was for you to understand.

(To Prem) Nose up, nose up, if you put it higher they'll admire you.
"It will all be over in a few years. You knew this was part of the plan."

Who knows what a thread will touch when it goes across the loom?

Mr. Waiter knows the rules. Mr. Waiter knows how to play. But Mr. Waiter won't say. Silent as the grave, he is.

(To Prem) Duck, Duck, Duck, Peacock!

Nooo! You have tasted the food of the Underworld and now you can never leave! (reveal)

Impossible Task woman

Woe is me! (weep pitifully)

My name is Merope. I have been condemned to this impossible task for past crimes. Through malicious deception I kept two true lovers apart and now as punishment I spend eternity picking out these seeds of green jealousy. They stain everything they touch. Look at my fingers (shows green-tipped fingers)!

The key is a branch from the favored tree of Aphrodite. Only the inexorable attraction of a lover can free me from this task. Help me!

Mummy says:

You have released my ka to the afterlife. In expression of my undying gratitute, I give you the key to approaching the Sphinx.

Stand before her and look her in the eye. Bow from the waist and intone this verse: "Great and mighty Sphinx, I beseech you: Test me that I may pass into the next realm."

The next sound you utter must be the answer to her riddle. If you know it not, retreat silently from her sight. You may return and address her again in the same manner, but remember that you only have one chance to answer correctly. If you fail, you cannot enter and must send another in your stead.

Gypsy

You want this piece of precious, don't you? Well come and claim it, if you can. The rules are simple. Fill my board: one per row, one per column, one per color. Come, come, even a child could solve this!

(Laugh) Try again, fool.

Oh ho, so you're not quite as dumb as you look. Well, a bargain's a bargain. Here is your trophy; take it and be gone, my dearest lackwit.

The Judge

You have been judged and found wanting. You shall not pass until you have balanced the scales.

(How do we do that?) Sacrifice. Balance your hearts against the feather.

Do not touch the feather!

That is not yours to give.

Your sacrifices are acceptable. You may pass.

Lachesis

(To Clotho) All this thread... There was no end to weave into the pattern. It was all a trap; Loki knew I would follow it, not knowing it was my own. Of course there was no end. Once I leaned into the box, it was too late. He pushed me in and slammed the lid. I could hear you calling for me, but I was bound too tightly to respond.

Sister, who are your guests?

Clotho: "Oh, I am so sorry, where are my manners? This is my middle sister, Lachesis. Sister, these are Avarice, Gluttony, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Lust, and Pride. They were not meant to be here yet, but the weaving was all snarled. Atropos and I made a mess of it in your absence. I spun the weavingÉ and Atoropos cut it. I'm afraid we cut them out of their timelines far too soon."

Well, now that I am back, we will have to take care of that. Come all of you. If you follow my instructions, I can weave you back into the pattern and return all of you to your rightful places.
